Disney Made Three Winter Films About Dogs In Six Years

15th December 2022

Because people love dogs so much, there are a lot of films about the animals, in basically every type of story imaginable, and a reason why some owners get cockapoo grooming is to ensure their pet’s coat is ready for its close-up.

One film company that loves making films about dogs more than perhaps any other is Disney, who have not only made over 20 live-action films about dogs, they managed to make three films about dogs in the snow in just six years.

The first of these was Snow Dogs, a comedy film starring Cuba Gooding Jr as a celebrity dentist who inherits a team of sledge Siberian huskies and must quickly learn how to bond with them to race in the local Arctic Challenge race.

It was a largely lightweight film, with the most notable part being that one of the scenes in the trailer involving the dogs talking and lying on a beach was implied to be part of the film but was a very short snippet from a dream sequence, using the same trick Kangaroo Jack did for its trailer.

The next film was a serious film with a somewhat controversial history. Eight Below from 2006 is the story of Jerry Shepherd (played by Paul Walker) who, after leaving his eight sledge dogs behind to escape a heavy snowstorm, spends six months trying to mount a rescue whilst they fight for survival.

The controversy was not in the film itself, which received critical praise despite a few technical errors, but in its origin. Eight Below is based on the Japanese film Nankyoku Monogatari (South Pole Story), more commonly known as Antarctica.

It did not receive a “No Animals Were Harmed” disclaimer from the American Humane Society based on fears that the dogs were subjected to unsafe conditions to get more realistic reactions.

Finally, there was the straight-to-DVD film Snow Buddies in 2008, the seventh sequel to the film Air Bud. Rather than play basketball, Buddy’s five puppies ended up flying with a shipment of ice cream to Alaska, where the young golden retrievers and one Siberian husky pull a sledge together.
