How Grooming Can Help To Keep Your Dog Cool During Summer
Making sure your dog is well groomed is never as important as it is during the summer, particularly during those random British heat waves that seem to pop up out of nowhere.
Though the weather can appear grey and drizzly for several weeks at a time, it is important to be prepared for a sudden change in temperature so your pet can be as comfortable as possible if the mercury suddenly soars.
Firstly, it is essential to regularly brush their fur on those hot days, as this removes excess fur. Therefore, it reduces their risk of overheating as they have less fur to trap in heat.
Lots of breeds shed their coats over the summer, so brushing them will remove the fur they are moulting. Loose fur can restrict airflow, causing the body to heat up, so getting rid of excess hair will cool them down.
At the same time, it is important not to shave their coats entirely, as this can result in them getting sunburnt. Their fur provides a protective layer from UV rays, so instead of removing their fur completely, opt for regular haircuts so their fur remains short and manageable.
You could also use pet-safe sun cream if you are worried about their skin, particularly applying it to areas of the body where there is less fur, such as their ears and paws.
Pet owners could also keep their dog cool by spraying some fresh water from a hose or bottle, as this lowers their body temperature. However, it is advisable not to keep wet towels on them, as they can attract heat and make them even hotter.
These things will help prevent your dog from overheating during the summer, which can lead to laboured breathing, extreme panting or salivating, and red membranes. They might also vomit, have diarrhoea, become unconscious, or have a seizure, so it is essential they are kept cool.
It is also important to make sure they stay hydrated during the summer by always carrying around portable water bottles that come with trays attached when going for a walk.
